Welcome to Year 5

A warm welcome back to school after the Summer Holidays! As always, we have lots to learn over the coming term. For more details on the Year 5 curriculum for 2017-18, you can download the documents posted at the bottom of this page.

Useful Information

This year, Mr McGill is teaching Monday-Thursday, with Ms Astbury teaching on Friday.

PE - PE (basketball this term) is every Friday after lunch so please make sure you have a PE kit in school on these days. Swimming is every Wedesday afternoon and will continue up until the end of the Autumn Term. You will also need a kit for "Marathon Club" on Wednesday morning, including trainers suitable for running on the Ponderosa.

Homework - Homework is handed out on Friday and expected in on Thursday, and will normally include maths and spelling, aswell as other tasks at different times. However, the most important task to do at home is reading! You need to be reading every night - it improves your learning, increases your vocabulary and it's fun! Please help us monitor how much your child is reading by ensuring their reading diaries are kept up to date.

Spelling homework Children will be given a personal list of spellings to practise, taken from spelling rules we have been learning in class or spelling errors made during the week. Children will then use the "Spell Well" leaflet to choose how they want to practise. If you misplace the leaflet, can download a copy from the link at the bottom of this page.

Our History topic this term is "The Victorians", with a particular focus on how The Victorians affected the local area. After gaining some background information about the the period, pupils will explore and research their own line of enquiry. We will be leaving the classroom to find out more about our local history, including a trip to Kelham Island Museum on 12th October.

In Science, the first topic this term will be Forces, with practical investigations linked to “Extreme Sports", followed by Properties and Changes in which the children will investigate the nature of different materials.

In Literacy, the main text types we will be learning to write this term are poetry and suspense writing, which will be linked to our class story, Varjak Paw. The second half of the term will focus on writing autobiographies.

In Maths, our focus this term is on understanding number and place value, before learning more about addition and subtraction. On Friday, Ms Astbury will be teaching children about area and perimeter.
