NETHERTHORPE SCHOOL SPORTS HALL

Background

When the chance came of making a bid for a lottery grant, via Sheffield Education Authority, to improve our PE facilities we jumped at it! Our PE and games facilities at that time were one of the poorest in the city, being a small, carpeted assembly hall upstairs. Hurrah!!! Our bid was accepted and then followed a building partnership between the School, the Local Education Authority (LEA) and Wildegoose Construction. The sports facility was constructed to our specific requirements in order to give the school the facilities it had lacked for the last 130 years. These same facilities could also be shared with the community by hiring it to sports groups at certain times.

Grand Opening

The Sports Hall was completed and handed over in July 2003 and we went in with a big bang! Such a marvellous play was performed as a school, with everyone working together. A team approach is

what Netherthorpe Primary School is all about and that is how the opening came together. It was a fantastic event put together by fantastic staff, enthusiastic pupils and extremely supportive parents.

The world famous boxing champion Johnny Nelson made a brilliant speech to the children, which was actually directed at them in a touching way. He spoke about making the most of life by determination. They "took" his words away with them and I am sure that they will stay with them forever.

Use of the Hall

Our Hall is used almost every evening as a community sports venue for Martial Arts, competitive skipping, badminton, table tennis, football training, volley-ball, drama, mixed sports and community association meetings. All this is as well as normal school use during the term-time day.
