OTHER ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

KELHAM ISLAND ~ Because Kelham Island Industrial Museum is very close to the school we make use of the many opportunities it has to offer. Pupils have played a part in developing its wild life area, creating artwork for its environmental resource room, as well as using the base for historical and geographical studies.

THE RIVER PORTER ~ Sheffield is ideally situated on the edge of dramatic and contrasting countryside. Excellent links with the Environmental Centre at Mayfield have been established. As part of their 'Rivers' topic Y5 followed the path of the Porter, from its source, through Mayfield to Hunters Bar.

CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD ~ To encourage reading, Y2 pupils join other schools in reading a range of top authors' books and to select

the one which will win Sheffield's top book award. The children are then invited to attend the prize giving at the Crucible and given the opportunity to meet many famous authors.

OTHER OPPORTUNITES FOR ENRICHMENT ~ Netherthorpe School recognises the value of giving children real experiences to develop their knowledge and understanding of their environment. Pupils have visited Bishops House, Haddon Hall, the Lyceum, the Fire Museum, the Millenium Gallery and the Winter Gardens, as well as many local sites. These visits are always linked into their studies so that their experiences can be used in their work.

HIGH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS ~ During the year, pupils who are seen to make outstanding progress in attitude, sport, effort and personal development receive one of a range of awards. Their names are engraved on these trophies for all to see and celebrate in their success.
